Speaker
Charles Balagizi
Biologist and director of the Geosite et Supersita programme at the Virunga Park (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
A geochemist and member of various advisory boards, much of Charles Balagizi's work has focused on the active African volcanoes Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira.
Doctor Charles Balagizi is a geochemist and geological risk researcher, and has worked for the Goma Volcano Observatory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2009. His main line of research centres on the monitoring of volcanoes, studies of volcanic gases, the assessment of natural threats and the monitoring of water quality in the western branch of the East Africa Rift, where he has been observing Lake Kivu and the active volcanoes Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira.
Balagizi holds a doctorate in the geochemistry of fluids from the University of Naples II, a master's in environmental geochemistry from the University of Liège, a master's in chemistry from ISP/Bukavu (Congo) and a postgrad certificate in Assessing Volcanic Hazards and Monitoring Active Volcanoes from the University of Hawaii. He is a member of the International Vulcanological Association and Chemistry of the Interior of the Earth, a member of the Volcanic Gases Chemistry Committee, member of the European Geosciences Union and the Congo Sciences Academy's Deep Carbon Observatory.
