Antonio Costa
Researcher at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Bologna, Italy)
Dr Antonio Costa is a senior researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - Sezione di Bologna, Bologna, Italy, where he was also Director General from 2019 to 2022.
He received his PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Bologna in 2004 and his main research interests are coupled fluid-rock dynamics of magmatic and volcanic processes; physical properties of magma; fluid flows in hydrothermal systems; dynamics of volcanic plumes; tephra dispersion and atmospheric transport of volcanic ash; atmospheric dispersion of volcanic and hydrothermal gases; volcanic lakes; lava flow modelling; volcanic hazards and risk assessment.
He has collaborated with scientists around the world on numerous funded research projects and is the author of several dozen papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has served as editor of several scientific journals. He was awarded the IAVCEI Wager Medal in 2013 for his scientific achievements.
He has been a member of the European Academy since 2021.He has been an international expert on volcanic hazards for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2011 and for the Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN) and the Italian Department of Civil Protection since 2012.
