Volcanologist Boris Behncke receives Worldcanic Award

Wordlcanic will recognise the fieldwork and dedication to Etna of this German researcher from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Italy.

Ever since he read about a spectacular and dramatic volcanic eruption in Iceland in the newspaper at the age of 10, the mysteries of the bowels of the earth have seduced this German who has lived half his life in the Mediterranean.

Boris Behncke studied at the German universities of Bochum and Kiel but did his doctorate at the Sicilian university of Catania because of the fascination that the majestic Etna has always held for him.  He has been studying and monitoring the movements of one of Europe's most active volcanoes for more than 25 years since he moved to Sicily in 1997.

For several decades, Behncke has been paying special attention to Etna and, in particular, to the recent and current eruptive behaviour of this volcano. Since May 2008, he has been involved in activities for the mapping of new lava flows and is currently a member of the INGV-OE's Information and Communication Group.

His activity outside INGV-OE includes outreach at seminars in schools and other institutions, as well as to the interested public and visitors to the Etna area.

Since 2020 Behncke is a Naturalist Guide with Federescursionismo Sicilia, author and co-author of more than 40 publications in international journals and has participated in numerous national and international congresses and meetings.
