The long intertwined history of humankind and the Campi Flegrei volcano

Costa's presentation will explore the deep connection between human activity and the Campi Flegrei volcanic region over the last 10,000 years.

Located in Campania, Italy, Campi Flegrei is one of the most important volcanic areas in Europe, known to have produced the continent's largest eruption at least 200,000 years ago. The geological activity of this region has shaped the landscape as well as human settlements and activities.

The talk looks at how people have historically exploited the natural resources of the volcanic environment, such as volcanic ash for building materials and thermal springs. It also describes the challenges of living in such a dynamic area, including earthquakes, ground deformation and periodic eruptions.
